Adding data to your eSIM: how top-ups work
When a top-up is offered, what it adds, and what to do when there isn’t one.
A top-up adds data to the eSIM you already have. Nothing new is installed: the data goes onto the same eSIM, on the same phone, and the travel line in your settings stays as it is.
Where to find it
Where your eSIM can take more data, “Add data” appears on it in “My eSIMs” and on its order page. Choose how much data to add, then pay by card as you did for the plan. Before you pay, each top-up shows the data it adds, its days and its price.
What a top-up adds
Each top-up is a set amount of data for a set number of days, from our supplier’s top-ups for your eSIM’s own plan. So the choices you see are the ones that fit that plan, and each is priced in your currency by the same rule as our plans.
Afterwards, your eSIM’s page lists each top-up with what it added and what it cost, and “My eSIMs” shows how many top-ups have been added to it.
When there’s no top-up
Whether an eSIM can take a top-up is our supplier’s decision at the time, so a plan doesn’t come with the promise of one. There’s none in these cases:
- The eSIM’s plan has ended. Our supplier takes a top-up while an eSIM is new, in use or used up, but not once its plan has ended, so top up before the last day rather than after it.
- The plan is one that can’t be topped up. A daily plan is one of these: its days are chosen when you buy it.
- Plans for its destination need an identity check, so we can’t top them up online yet.
Before you buy, a plan’s details can tell you where it stands. Where our supplier says, the details read “May be offered later, on your eSIM’s page” or “Not available for this plan”.
After you pay
The top-up’s page says We’re adding your data, then Your data has been added. It goes onto the eSIM you already have, so there’s nothing else for you to do.
The data figures on your order page are our supplier’s last reading rather than a live meter, so the added data can take a while to show there. If a top-up you paid for still hasn’t been added after a while, write to us with its order number, which you’ll find under Orders in your account.
When a new plan is the answer
If your data has run out and there’s no top-up, buy a new plan. It comes with a new eSIM to install, so do it on Wi-Fi, and switch the phone’s mobile data to the new line once it’s installed.
When you know where you’re going, the store shows each destination’s plans, with their data, days and price.
